Specialist Data Recovery

Data recovery really is a specialist field and we perform the majority of our recoveries at our own recovery lab. IT Pro Expert provides one of the best data recovery services in the UK. We offer an honest range of options for people who can’t afford the huge fees charged by other companies. However drives with physical damage will still be costly due to the component replacement costs which vary for each drive.

Data Recovery Services

IT Pro Expert has its own recovery lab and is associated with the other world leading manufacturer approved drive recovery company that can deal with the most difficult of recoveries. Be cautious of company that use unknown third parties to attempt their data recoveries.
There are only a handful of truly professional companies who are capable of true data recovery and adhere to strict data safety & security practises.

Each drive will have a unique repair procedure, associated cost and we will quote prior to continuing with the recovery work. See our guide prices below.
There are no hidden costs. You will need to provide a replacement drive (or we can provide one at cost) for your data to be returned to you on.
Typical costs are £200 to £500 for most recoveries and £500 upwards for drives with significant damage.

Important: If a drive is failing. Stop using it immediately. Hard drives can degrade quite rapidly once a failure has started. Don’t allow an inexperienced IT company to ‘look’ at it because they often use recovery software which causes a lot of additional damage as it often ‘works’ the drive to a point of significant failure which is the point where we then have to attempt a recovery. Recovery software can only be used on deleted files not failing drives. There is usually only one good opportunity to recover the maximum amount of data using specialist data recovery equipment.
Also note that SSD/NVME drives can ‘self erase’ free or corrupted drive space during a process called ‘TRIM’. This wiping process typically happens once a day (so shut down immediately) or when you take it to an IT company that doesn’t use specialist equipment that blocks this process which then effectively removes any chance of data recovery by anyone as it is effectively securely wiped.

If you don’t choose to use us for your data recovery, make sure you check for 1 star reviews at other companies before using them as there is a significant amount of scam data recovery companies out there. They claim high success rates, quote one thing but charge another, work on drives in non-clean environment causing further damage and use inexperienced staff despite what their website may say. The truth is not all drives are recoverable and the real success rate of any good company is probably around 70 to 80% if they are working on damaged drives not deleted files.

A Guide to Diagnosing Hard Drive Failure:
What to Look and Listen For

The noises a hard drive makes are one of the most common indicators of its health. A healthy hard drive typically produces a quiet whirring or spinning sound and occasional soft clicks during data access. However, loud or unusual noises often signal a critical mechanical failure. This guide is only for Hard Drives not Solid State Drives or USB.
Although this guide is a good indicator, sometimes the cause can be something that is uncommon.

SoundDescriptionLikely Cause(s)Difficulty in Recovery
Clicking or TickingA rhythmic, repetitive clicking sound, often referred to as the “Click of Death.”Read/Write Head Failure: The actuator arm is failing to find the data tracks and repeatedly resets itself. This could be due to a head crash or a failure of the actuator arm.Very High. Requires a professional data recovery service with a cleanroom to replace the internal head assembly from a matching donor drive. Expensive.
Grinding or ScrapingA harsh, metallic grinding or scraping noise. This is one of the most severe failure sounds.Head Crash or Platter Damage: The read/write heads are physically scraping the magnetic platters, actively destroying data. Can also be a failure of the spindle motor’s bearings.Extreme. This is the most severe type of physical failure. Data may already be permanently lost. Recovery is highly complex, expensive, and often only partially successful, if at all.
Buzzing or WhirringA high-pitched, continuous buzzing or a loud whirring sound that is not normal for the drive.Spindle Motor Failure: The motor that spins the platters is seizing or failing to maintain a consistent speed, preventing the drive from operating correctly.Very High. This requires a complex platter swap, where platters are moved to a functional donor drive in a cleanroom. It is one of the most delicate recovery procedures.
Beeping or ChirpingA faint but persistent beeping or chirping noise, especially when first powered on.Stuck Spindle Motor or Read/Write Heads: The heads are physically stuck to the platter surface (stiction), or the motor is unable to spin the platters due to insufficient power or a mechanical issue.High. A professional can often unstick the heads or address the motor issue in a cleanroom. Success rates are generally good if no platter damage has occurred.
No SoundThe drive is completely silent and does not appear to spin up when power is applied.Electronic Failure: Usually a problem with the Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The drive is not receiving power to its internal components due to a power surge or component failure.Moderate. Involves sourcing a compatible donor and a complex transferring a unique ROM chip from the original board or Main Controller IC with integrated ROM. Sometimes a short on the main board can damage the internal head pre-amplifier adding significant complexity.

Important to note

Most complex recoveries require sourcing an identical drive that is used for spare/donor parts with very specific identifiers including country of manufacture, year/month match, board numbers, exact model numbers and sometimes partial serial numbers. This can take time, international postage and these drives, even if old are sold at high prices.

Never attempt to swop components yourself. If you attempt to swop a PCB for example and it is performed without a ROM chip transfer, you are likely to make the drive unrecoverable as it will write incorrect data to the drive.

Never attempt to open the drive yourself. Even 1 second of peeking will causing dust to ingress and will likely make the drive more difficult or impossible to recover.

Never take your drive to a regular IT service centre as they will very likely cause more damage and also render your drive unrecoverable.
