How much does it cost for solar panels?

We only use industry-leading solar panels ranging from 450W to 700W to ensure you get maximum wattage per square metre. These panels cost between £60 and £150 each. The installation, however, can be the more expensive part of the setup, and depends on your roof type and location. Installation prices typically run from £3,000 to £6,000.

How long do solar batteries run for, and what are their capacities?

We supply batteries in 14kW, 28kW, 43kW, 57kW and 72kW packs. These can be extended to larger capacities of up to 448kW, but your inverters and solar panels will need to support the charging capacity of the battery. If your power consumption is typically 1kW per hour, then a 14kW pack should last about 11 to 12 hours. The usable capacity of any LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery is around 80% of stated capacity, even if it claims it can be used to 95% depth of discharge. All solar storage batteries live longer and support higher loads if kept above 17 to 20% charge.

Can you use batteries only to save on electricity costs and act as a backup?

Yes. You can save around 70 to 75% of your energy costs by installing batteries and an inverter alone. You charge the batteries at night, between 12:30am and 4:30am, at around 7 to 10 pence per kWh, then use them during the day while drawing no current off the grid. This system can also act as a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to keep you going during power outages.

Sun versus solar in the UK — does it work all year round?

The further south you are in the UK, the better off you are with solar power. In the summer, April to September, a good solar installation with batteries will keep you pretty much off-grid most of the time. From October to November you lose about half of the solar and start to rely on a night-time grid charge at the cheap rate, which is still a 70 to 75% saving. From December to February you will need to rely completely on the night-time grid charge, but when March comes around things start to improve again. This is why you really need a combined solar and battery solution to get the maximum benefit.
