Desk phone or portable handset — which do you need?

The first decision is whether you need a fixed desk phone, a portable cordless handset, or a combination of both. It comes down to how your staff actually work.

Choose a desk phone if…

  • Staff are seated at a fixed workstation for most of the day
  • You need multiple SIP lines and busy lamp field presence keys
  • You want the best possible audio quality and AI noise cancellation
  • The roles are reception, call centre, management or executive
  • You need USB headset support or EHS integration

Choose a portable handset if…

  • Staff move around a building, warehouse or site
  • You need phone coverage in areas without data cabling
  • The roles are retail, hospitality, facilities or light industrial
  • You want a ruggedised option for demanding environments
  • You are expanding an existing DECT base station network

Understanding the technology

Before comparing models it helps to understand the key technologies, so you know exactly what you are paying for and why certain features command a higher price.

PoE (Power over Ethernet)

Desk phones can be powered through the network cable, with no separate power socket needed. 802.3af handles up to 15.4W for standard phones, while 802.3at (PoE+) delivers up to 30W for larger touchscreen models. If your switch does not support PoE, you will need a separate AC power adapter.

DECT (1.9GHz wireless)

A dedicated wireless standard built specifically for voice. It runs on a separate frequency to Wi-Fi, so it does not compete with your office network traffic, and it offers excellent range — up to 300m outdoors, typically 50m indoors — with consistent low-latency audio and long battery life. A base station is required.

Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac)

Some desk phones have Wi-Fi built in, which is useful for hot-desks, boardrooms and locations where running a network cable is impractical. Dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) is preferable, as the 5 GHz band is less congested and more stable for voice. Only some models include Wi-Fi built in; others need a USB dongle.

Bluetooth

On a desk phone, Bluetooth is primarily for connecting wireless headsets, and BT 5.0 or later is preferred for stable connections at around 10m. On portable handsets it lets you pair wireless earbuds or a Bluetooth headset for hands-free use on a call. Some phones need a USB Bluetooth dongle; newer models have it built in.

Android on a desk phone

Premium phones such as the T88W Pro run a full Android OS, so you can install apps — Microsoft Teams, Zoom, your CRM — directly on the phone, turning it into a small all-in-one business terminal. Genuinely useful for power users, but if your team only needs to make and receive calls it is unnecessary overhead.

SIP lines and accounts

A SIP line is a registered connection to your VoIP server or cloud PBX. Entry-level phones support 3 lines, which is enough for most staff, while manager and executive models support 8 to 16. More lines mean more simultaneous calls and more extensions monitored via BLF keys without an expansion module.

Headset ports — what the connectors mean

Every desk phone and handset in this range offers different headset connection options. The port type matters for compatibility with your existing headsets and for future upgrades.

RJ9 (4P4C)

The standard telephone headset jack — the small square connector found on almost all corded office headsets, including Plantronics, Jabra and the Yealink corded WH series. Best for traditional wired headsets and for replacing an existing headset-equipped phone. Analogue only, so no digital audio quality improvement.

3.5mm (TRS)

The standard audio jack, the same as a smartphone or laptop headphone socket, and found on portable handsets. Best for consumer earbuds, lightweight mono headsets and call centre staff on the move. Most headsets get no call control buttons for answering or hanging up unless they are specifically compatible.

USB-A

USB headsets plug in like any USB device and the phone presents the headset as a USB audio device, supporting digital audio and call control. Best for professional USB headsets such as the Yealink UH and WH series, Jabra Evolve and Poly Voyager. Requires a USB port, which not every desk phone has.

USB-C

The newer USB standard, with the same digital audio benefits as USB-A but a reversible connector. In this range it is currently found only on the T88W Pro. Best for modern USB-C headsets and accessories, and for future-proofing — though there are still fewer USB-C headsets on the market than USB-A.

EHS (electronic hook switch)

Not a physical port but an adapter connection: the EHS40 adapter plugs into the phone and a DECT or wireless headset, letting the headset answer and end calls automatically. Best for call centre agents using DECT wireless headsets who need hands-free answering. Requires a compatible headset and the EHS40 adapter, sold separately.

Bluetooth (built in or dongle)

Wireless headset connection. Built-in Bluetooth is more convenient; a USB dongle such as the BT50 or BT52 adds it to phones without it natively. Best for wireless headsets like the Yealink BH series, Jabra Evolve2 65 and Poly Voyager Focus. Range is limited to around 10m and can be affected by interference.

AI noise cancellation — what is it actually doing?

This is one of the most frequently misunderstood features in business telephony. There are two distinct problems: stopping background noise from reaching the person you are calling, and protecting your own ears from noise at your end. Yealink addresses each separately.

Noise Proof Technology

Noise Proof uses an AI-trained model running on the phone's processor. When you speak, it separates your voice from background noise in real time — keyboard clicking, air conditioning, open-plan chatter, road traffic — and sends a clean voice signal to the other party. The listener gets a significantly quieter, cleaner call regardless of how noisy your environment is.

Acoustic Shield

Acoustic Shield is the complementary outbound feature. It uses a second microphone to monitor ambient sound and cancels it dynamically before your voice is transmitted. Together with Noise Proof, these two technologies make up Yealink's full AI noise stack, and the premium grade on the T88W Pro uses more processing headroom for greater suppression in very challenging environments.

Budget guide — getting the most from every pound

Budget — under £110

For businesses watching spend carefully, or equipping staff with moderate call volumes. You still get a genuine HD VoIP phone with AI noise cancellation.

Best desk pick: T73U, £75. Three SIP lines, AI noise cancellation, RJ9 and USB-A headset ports, PoE or AC. The trade-offs are the smaller 2.8" screen and a single USB port. Add the BT50 dongle at roughly £20 for wireless headset support.

Best portable pick: W78H, £68 (handset only). Cost-effective if you already have a compatible base station such as the W70B or W80B — 14h talk time, Bluetooth for headsets, 3.5mm jack. Choose the W78P at £101 if you need the base included.

Do not compromise below this tier; the quality drop is significant.

Mid-range — £110 to £200

The sweet spot for most businesses: larger screen, more SIP lines, better audio, and in some cases built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, without premium pricing.

Best desk pick: T74U, £100, or T74W, £115. The T74U is the T73U's smarter sibling — 4.3" screen, 8 SIP lines, two USB ports — and suits managers and team leads. The T74W adds Wi-Fi and built-in BT 5.0, so phones can go anywhere without network cabling, which is worth the extra in shared spaces.

Best portable pick: W59R, £98 (handset) or W79P, £122 (system). IP67-rated for light industrial, hospitality and outdoor use, with 17h talk time. The trade-off is the 3.5mm headset jack, which is sealed for the IP67 rating.

Premium — £200 and above

For executives and power users whose phone is a primary productivity tool rather than just a communication device.

Executive desk: T77U, £220. A 7" IPS touchscreen, 16 SIP lines, PoE+ power and enhanced AI noise cancellation. Ideal for directors and department heads managing multiple lines — no Android, but extremely capable as a feature phone.

Premium all-in-one: T88W Pro, £275. Android 9, Google Play, front camera for video calling, BT 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB-A and USB-C, premium noise cancellation. The only model here that properly supports Teams or Zoom calls and softphone apps alongside a hardware SIP line.

Reserve this tier for roles where the extra capability directly saves time or improves high-value calls.

Ruggedised environments — industrial, warehouse and outdoor

Standard office phones are not designed to survive warehouses, manufacturing plants, kitchens, construction sites, or anywhere with water, dust or regular drops. The W59R and W79P are the right tools for these environments.

Connectivity decisions — a practical summary

My switch doesn't support PoE — can I still use these phones?

Yes. Every phone in this range supports an AC power adapter as an alternative, and Yealink sells the PSU48V separately at typically £10 to £15. You will need one per phone and a free mains socket at each desk. If you are deploying multiple phones, a PoE switch or injector is usually the cleaner long-term investment.

Do I need a separate router or access point for Wi-Fi phones?

No. Phones with built-in Wi-Fi — the T74W and T88W Pro — connect to your existing wireless network like a laptop or smartphone. You need to be confident your Wi-Fi coverage is strong where the phone will sit. For call quality, a 5 GHz connection with low interference is preferable to 2.4 GHz in busy wireless environments.

Can I use my existing Jabra or Plantronics headset with these phones?

Most likely, depending on the connection type. Corded headsets with RJ9 connectors work on all desk phones, USB-A headsets work on any model with a USB-A port, and Bluetooth headsets work on models with built-in Bluetooth or via the BT50 and BT52 dongles. For EHS auto-answer, check your headset is on Yealink's compatibility list — the EHS40 adapter covers the most common Jabra and Plantronics DECT headsets.

Choosing a headset — the decisions that actually matter

A headset is often a bigger investment than the phone it connects to, yet many businesses buy the cheapest option and then wonder why call quality is poor, staff complain of ear fatigue, or open-plan noise bleeds into every conversation.

Headset types — wired, DECT and Bluetooth

The connection technology determines range, flexibility and price. There is no universally best choice; the right type depends on how your staff work.

Wired USB — UH46 / UH48

Plugs directly into a USB-A or 3.5mm port. No charging, no pairing, no range limits — it simply works, which makes it the best choice for call centres, reception desks and anyone who rarely leaves their chair. Lowest cost per headset.

Trade-off: you are tethered to the desk. Stretching to a filing cabinet or standing up mid-call is not an option.

DECT wireless — WH68 series

Uses the dedicated DECT frequency, the same technology as cordless phones. Range of up to 180m gives genuine freedom to walk away from the desk mid-call, and it beats Bluetooth for stability and call quality in dense wireless environments.

Trade-off: only works with a DECT-compatible device — a desk phone via the DD10K adapter, or a PC via USB dongle. It cannot pair with a mobile phone.

Bluetooth — BH74 / BH78

Connects to any Bluetooth device — desk phone, PC, laptop or mobile, and to two at once with multipoint. Range is around 10m. The most flexible option for hybrid workers switching between a desk phone and a laptop through the day.

Trade-off: shorter range than DECT and more susceptible to interference in offices full of wireless devices. Needs built-in Bluetooth or a dongle on the phone.

Monoaural or binaural — which ear?

This is frequently overlooked but significantly affects day-to-day usability. Monoaural headsets cover one ear and leave the other open, keeping you aware of your surroundings — ideal for receptionists, customer-facing staff, and anyone who needs to stay alert to the office around them. Binaural headsets cover both ears, blocking more ambient noise and reducing listening fatigue on long calls, which suits call-heavy roles, noisy open-plan offices, and staff taking back-to-back calls all day.

Noise cancellation — two different problems

This is the most misunderstood area of headset purchasing. People often ask for "noise cancellation" without distinguishing between two entirely separate functions, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a headset disappoints after purchase.

Problem one: background noise reaching the person you are calling. This is what most people mean — stopping open-plan chatter, keyboard clicks and air conditioning going through to the caller. The solution is a noise-cancelling microphone. All headsets in this range include one, but quality varies. A single noise-cancelling mic (WH68 series, UH46) is a directional boom microphone that reduces ambient noise through physical placement and basic DSP, and is effective in moderately noisy environments. A multi-mic array with beamforming (BH74, BH78) samples the environment across several microphones and isolates your voice, and the BH78's six-mic array performs noticeably better in open-plan offices and call centres.

Problem two: noise reaching your own ears. This is what technically qualifies as active noise cancellation — the headset generating anti-noise to cancel environmental sound before it reaches your eardrums. Only the BH74 and BH78 include active ANC. If you work somewhere noisy and need to concentrate on what the caller is saying, ANC matters; in a typical office where noise is not a distraction for you as the listener, it is a nice-to-have rather than a necessity.

Hybrid ANC explained

The BH78 uses hybrid ANC, combining two types at once. Feedforward ANC uses an external microphone to detect incoming noise and generate a cancellation signal before the sound reaches your ear. Feedback ANC uses an internal microphone to monitor residual noise that gets through and applies a second cancellation pass. The result is markedly more effective than a single-mode system, particularly against low-frequency noise such as air conditioning, trains and road traffic.

Key specifications to check before buying

  • Wireless range — DECT reaches up to 180m, Bluetooth around 10m. If staff walk to a printer, meeting room or store cupboard mid-call, DECT wins by a large margin.
  • Battery talk time — the WH68 series runs about 13h; the BH74 and BH78 reach 35h with ANC off, and around 20h with ANC on, which is still a full day.
  • Phone compatibility — the T73U, T74U and T77U need the BT50 or BT52 dongle for Bluetooth headsets; the T74W and T88W Pro have Bluetooth built in. The compatibility tab above covers every combination.
  • EHS auto-answer — DECT headsets need the DD10K adapter; Bluetooth headsets work natively on phones with built-in Bluetooth and need a dongle on the others; USB headsets auto-answer natively.
  • Comfort over a long shift — after six hours or more, weight, headband pressure and ear cup material matter. The BH78 and BH74 use memory foam cushions and the WH68 series is a lightweight monoaural device. Trial a unit before bulk ordering if you can.
  • Multipoint connection — the BH74 and BH78 support two-device multipoint, and the WH68 Hybrid adds a second Bluetooth channel alongside DECT for exactly this use case.
  • Teams and Zoom certification — certified headsets have hardware buttons that map correctly to the platform. Every headset in this range carries Teams and Zoom certification, so it is not a differentiator here, but confirm it if you use a different UC platform.

Budget guide for headsets

Entry — under £65

The UH46 is the smart entry pick. Dual USB-A and 3.5mm means it works on desk phones, PCs, laptops and handsets with a 3.5mm jack. Solid noise-cancelling boom mic, Teams certified, and ideal for general office staff who are mostly desk-bound.

Mid — £65 to £100

The UH48 is a wired upgrade with a better noise-cancelling mic, worth it for call-intensive roles. The WH68 suits staff who need wireless freedom without paying for Bluetooth — DECT range is far superior for anyone moving around the office.

Mid-high — £100 to £130

The BH74 fits a hybrid worker switching between desk phone and laptop all day, as Bluetooth multipoint handles both at once. The WH68 Workstation or WH68 Hybrid give DECT with simultaneous mobile connectivity.

Premium — £130 and above

The BH78 is for any role where call quality is critical: hybrid ANC and a six-mic beamforming array produce noticeably cleaner audio than anything else here. The SP96 suits hot-desks or meeting rooms needing a shared speakerphone rather than personal headsets.

Buy for the role, not the spec sheet — the right phone is the cheapest one that does everything that role actually needs.
